Storytelling Events in September and October 2016

As if trying to prepare my first novel, Caged, for publication in October weren’t enough, I’m involved in a heck of a lot of storytelling stuff over the next month.  As founder of Better Said Than Done, Virginia’s premiere storytelling troupe, when I use the term storytelling, I mean true, personal stories performed before a live audience. And, generally, that audience consists of grown-ups. (I periodically get emails from children oriented organizations asking me to put on a storytelling show and I have to explain – it’s really not for kids.)

But enough about me. Here’s a list of storytelling stuff I’m involved in:

September 27, 2016 – “Your Origin Story” Workshop
George Mason University, Fairfax Campus

This free 1 hour workshop is part of George Mason University’s Fall for the Book Festival. Fellow Better Said Than Done teacher Mary Supley Foxworth and I will be helping students craft their true, personal origin story. Whether they choose to perform it one day on stage, or not, is up to them. No registration necessary.

September 29, 2016 – “The Impossible Dream” Storytelling Show
The Auld Shebeen, Fairfax, VA

This free night of true, personal storytelling includes fellow Better Said Than Done storytellers Ann Cavazos, Fanny Crawford, Sandra Hull, Jay Krasnow, John Pelar, Jack Scheer and Mary and David Supley Foxworth sharing stories of dreams, quests, and impossible things. Part of the Fall for the Book Festival. Details here.

October 1, 2016 – “Tell Your Story, Then Write It” Storytelling Panel
The Writer’s Center, Bethesda, MD

Transform your memories into stories. “If you wait for others to tell your story, they might get it wrong!” warns nationally renowned storyteller Ellouise Schoettler. Along with acclaimed novelist and workshop leader Solveig Eggerz and past President of the Association of Personal Historians Pat McNees, Schoettler will lead a program that explains how memoirists and writers of personal stories can enrich their writing by beginning with oral storytelling. Panelists will include JP Robinson, Dario DiBattista, and Len Kruger. Details here.

October 29, 2016 – “A Night at the Improv 3” Improvisational Storytelling Show
The Auld Shebeen, Fairfax, VA

In Better Said Than Done’s 3rd annual night of improvisational storytelling, storytellers are thrown into the fire as they are given prompts from the audience and have to develop their true, personal stories on the fly. $15 at the door or at BetterSaidThanDone.com
